AUSSIE WEB DESIGNERS ARE PREPARED FOR INDUSTRY SHIFTS TO INCREASE VIDEO CONTENT AND MOBILE SITES

AIMIA survey results reveal nearly three-quarters of web designers believe their roles are changing, majority expected to adopt coding skills

SYDNEY, Australia| November 9, 2011| According to a recent survey in Australia and New Zealand commissioned by Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and conducted by the Digital Industry Body - AIMIA, the role of the web designer is evolving to encompass previously tangential disciplines like coding, illustration, photography and marketing as well as other business-focused skills.

The survey asked web designers in Australia and New Zealand about the ways their roles had recently changed, the impact and importance of video, if they were utilising cloud computing and more.

Of the 95 responses received, 70 percent reported that their web design roles had changed and more than 50 percent noted an increase in demand for digital video content in 2011. Nearly 75 percent of respondents shared that they’ve been focusing on mobile-enabled websites this year, solidifying Australia’s status as a leading adopter of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

Additional findings include:

• More than 75 percent say their role now involves coding, blurring the lines between designer and developer;

• Nearly 50 percent have increased their focus on designing for digital publications in 2011; and

• Coding, animation, CSS3 and video editing are skills designers want to develop in 2012.

Respondents also speculated about 2012 industry trends, with the most popular responses anticipating an increased demand for mobile apps, even more digital video content; greater use of digital video for company announcements, and the emergence of even more HTML5 enabled websites. Interestingly, a number of designers felt there would be a greater use of crowdsourcing for projects next year.

“The survey reinforces the fact that as the digital world continues to rapidly transform itself, the designer community is responding to the many opportunities and challenges presented to them,” AIMIA CEO John Butterworth stated. "It’s not just organisations that need to be agile, it’s the people working within them and designers are clearly adapting to the changing digital environment.”

Michael Stoddart, APAC evangelist, Adobe Systems said, “The survey presented some interesting results while also confirming trends we’ve seen play out this year around the increased demand for video, mobile apps and mobile-enabled websites. These key trends are set to continue, just as the role of the web designed will continue to evolve. Animation, video editing, CSS3 for cross platform, mobile and tablet solutions are all skills designers tell us they would like to learn next year. We were encouraged with the focus on HTML5 in the survey responses. Adobe is the world’s leading provider of HTML5 tools. We’re looking forward to an explosion of creativity leveraging these tools in 2012.”
